Description

Dorothy Elderdice, the first director of the Historical Society, noted in Vol. 4, No. 1 “Bulletin of the Historical Society of Carroll County” November 1957, in the article, “The Sherman-Shellman House and Its Dwellers, 1807-1939” that “A few articles used by former owners of the house are still there. A large Victorian wardrobe, a spinning wheel, two horsehair trunks, a bust of Dickens, a kitchen table, a carpet bag, a motto, and a picture of Wesley which hung over Miss Shellman’s bed throughout her life." This picture of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, hung over Mary’s bed her entire life. While Mary was a member of the Episcopal Church, she shared John Wesley’s value of service above all. Wesley was deeply committed to social reform, including caring for the poor, education and prison reform. Original deed of gift reads "Picture of John Wesley."
