During World War I, Eagle Pass, Texas, played a significant role in U.S. military operations along the Mexico–U.S. border. The area housed a military installation known as Camp Eagle Pass, situated near Fort Duncan, a historic U.S. Army post established in 1849. In 1916, amidst the Mexican Revolution and following Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, the U.S. Army deployed additional troops to the border region to prevent further incursions.
Among the units stationed there was the 5th Maryland Infantry Regiment, which included notable figures such as Private Henry Gilbert Costin. Costin gained valuable experience on the border as the 5th drilled and patrolled alongside other Guardsmen in Eagle Pass.Acquisition
