Colonel James Meriwether Shellman was Mary Bostwick Shellman's father. He passed away in 1851, leaving his widow, Catherine Jones Shellman, with four young children, the eldest being just seven years old. Born in Louisville, Georgia, he moved to Westminster upon the formation of Carroll County and was a prominent local figure. Colonel Shellman held several notable positions during his life; he was an attorney, the first burgess (mayor) of Westminster, a member of the Maryland Legislature, a Maryland Militia officer, and served as the auditor of the Court from 1837 until his death in 1851. His passing was the catalyst for his wife, Catherine, to demonstrate her "characteristic independence" by deciding to support her family through her own efforts, specifically by starting a school. A portrait of Colonel James Meriwether Shellman was among the family's possessions.Acquisition
