Portrait, oil pastel. Painted by artist Frederick Kemmelmeyer (c. 1760-1821) c. 1805-1812. Depicts 3/4 waist view of a man with black hair tied with a black ribbon. Subject is wearing high stiff white collar, silver buttoned waistcoat and black frock coat. Simple background of blue peach and shaded hues. Framed in black frame with gold edge.

Context

From the Maryland Center for History and Culture's catalog record: "Abraham Crapster (1752-1812) was born in Somerset County, New Jersey. By about 1760, the family moved to Frederick County, Maryland near Taneytown. In 1775, he married Margaret E. McCaleb (1759-1819). During the Revolutionary War (1775,) he joined Captain Abraham Hayter's Company, Maryland Militia, serving as a sergeant within the unit. Crapster is buried in Piney Creek Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Taneytown."
