Description

Run-away advertisement, reproduction printed on cardstock. Title printed "THIRTY DOLLARS Reward.", details the physical description and skills of an enslaved man named Peter who ran away from the Shriver farm at Union Mills Homestead. Created and signed David Shriver (1735-1826), dated June 20th 1809.

Context

David Shriver Sr. (pictured in 1998.049.001) served as a militia officer and member of the Maryland House of Delegates and Senate as well as the Maryland Constitutional Convention. Despite his and advocacy for Revolutionary ideals and independence from the British Empire, he still purchased and enslaved many people, including Peter, described in this advertisement distributed around the state, whose birth and death dates are unknown. David Shriver's image and works remain known today, but Peter and the many enslaved servants on his properties are only known through brief descriptions.
