Note

The American Sentinel was the successor to the Westminster Carrolltonian and ran from 1855 to 1928. Originally supporting the nativist American Party, the Sentinel was the primary organ for the Republican Party in Carroll County. Its editors included William H. Grammar (1855-1862), Thomas J. Lockard (1862-1868), Harry J. Shellman (1868), William L.W. Seabrook (1868-1873, 1888-1909), Dr. William H. Rippard (1873-1888) and Joseph D. Brooks (1909-1928).
