Description

Clock, tall case. A: body. 86.25"h x 18.5"w x 10.5"d. Walnut, pegged construction. Attached crown molding around front and sides at base of hood. Waist door is rectangular with arched top and rat tail hinges. Back constructed of a single board which has visible plane marks. B: hood. 24.5"h x 18"w x 10.5"d. Flat top; small rectangular window on each side; door has large window with arched top and simple hook and eye latch. Doric pilaster at back on each side. Large dovetails visible at top on each side. C: works. 30 hour movement. Painted iron face has arched top; decorated with large conch shell design at top of arch with smaller conch at each corner, all painted in gold. Two hands. On face, in script: "Eli Bentley Taneytown" D: pendulum. Round, poured lead with brass front; on steel shaft with hook bent into top. E,F: weights. Small poured lead weights, inverted cone shape with hook set into top. G,H: pair of steel chains with a teardrop shaped lead weight at end. Chain is fed over gear in works and attached to top of weight to act as counterbalance. I: 4" long wood pin, square at top and round at bottom, fits through hole in body of clock to hold waist door closed.
