Badge, "WASHINGTON / CAMP No. 36 / P. O. of A. / DAY, MD." marked in metallic gold on a red, white, and blue silk ribbon also with a brass edged paper medallion with a depiction of Liberty, above this are crossed United States flags with appliquéd silk flags attached in ripples, the ribbon is attached to a bar pin with a depiction of a woman’s and man’s handshake, on the reverse, a black ribbon stamped in metallic silver depicts Martha Washington and reads "IN MEMORIAM / WASHINGTON / CAMP No. 36 / P. O. OF A. / DAY, MD", entire badge is edged in woven gold metallic lace and the bottom is trimmed with metallic fringe, made by the Torsch & Franz Badge Company, Baltimore, MD., c. 1915. Paper wrapper, 8.5" x 3.5", from the badge maker, Torsch & Franz Badge Company, was included in the gift. It is printed black ink on white paper and depicts a badge, union trademarks, and other symbols.

Note

Most likely belonged to Frances Elsie Buckingham, who was admitted to membership of Washington Camp No. 36, P. O. of A., 8 May 1915. Frances Elsie Buckingham (b. 1899 d. 1987) joined the Washington Camp No. 36 Patriotic Order of Americans at Day, Md. (now Woodbine) on 8 May 1915. She was the daughter of Frank and Ellen V. Buckingham. Ellen and Frances’s future mother-in-law, Rhoda C. Lewis, were also members of the P. O. of A. According to the donor, these items were found in the sewing machine she received for her 16th birthday. Frances Elsie Buckingham Lewis was the wife of Albert O. Lewis and the mother of the donor. She was a member of Morgan Chapel United Methodist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary Sykesville American Legion Post 223.
