Description

Clock, tall case. Walnut clock measures 91" x 21.5" x 12.5". Front of base is paneled. Corners have quarter-round fluted columns. The base rests on bracket feet. A sloped molding leads up to the shaft of the clock. The shaft is rectangular with a rectangular door. The top of the door has a semicircle shape with a ogee curve below that; this curve is asymmetrical. A pierced brass escutcheon is used at the proper right side of the door. A small panel of veneer is used just above the top of the door. The corners of the waist have quarter-round fluted columns. A sloped molding leads up to the bonnet. The rectangular bonnet has fluted Ionic columns with brass capitals at the front corners; columns at the back corner have no capitals. The front clock face window door is rectangular with a semi-circle shape at the top. The top of the bonnet is squarely finished with a plain molding cornice. There are no finials. A sounding hole is present at the top of the bonnet. Rectangular windows with semi-circle tops are present in the sides of the bonnet. The iron clock face is painted white with Roman hour numbers and Arabic minute numbers. A dial behind the face gives the day of the month in Arabic numbers. Designs of flowers and strawberries are painted in the corners and a pheasant is painted at the top in brown, gray, blue, and pink. "FREDERICK, M D." is painted below the date dial. Brass hour and minute hands are pierced with circles and scrolled. The brass pendulum has only a front face; it has no lead weight in the rear. Two small oblong weights run the clock and are attached with steel chain, most likely not original. Possibly manufactured by John Fessler, Frederick, Md., c. 1810. A: body. B: hood. C: works with weights attached. D: pendulum. E: case key.
