Quilt. Appliqué, in Baltimore Album quilt tradition. 82.5" x 83.5". In red, orange, yellow, bright green, bright blue, and reddish brown cottons applied to white cotton. Quilt is comprised of 16 appliquéd pictorial blocks - each 16.75" - surrounded by a grape vine border with green leaves, vines, and stems with clumps of eight grapes in blue, reddish brown, and yellow. Hand sewn. Proceeding from the corner with the documentation label, left to right up the quilt, the pictorial blocks include: (1) a blue bird with embroidered eye over a United States flag with four yellow stars, possibly a motif representative of a liberty cap, a shield figure with red and white stripes and floral figures; (2) a bunch of red and yellow flowers with leaves "tied" with a green and red bow motif; (3) red, yellow, orange, and red and yellow petaled flowers in a blue and red vase shape; (4) circular floral motif of red, orange, and yellow flowers and buds on green leaves; (5) red flowers with yellow centers and buds in a yellow and orange vase motif; (6) grape-like flowers in red, yellow, and green; (7) circular grapevine motif with clumps of yellow, blue, and reddish brown grapes; (8) red and yellow globular petals on green stems in a yellow and red cross-hatched basket; (9) red, orange, and yellow flowers and buds (with leaves but no vines) in an orange and yellow basket; (10) circular holly-like floral motif with red, yellow, and green grape-like flowers; (11) bunch of grape-like red, yellow, blue, and reddish brown flowers "tied" with blue, yellow, and red bow; (12) circular motif of three-layered red, orange, yellow, and blue flowers, green leaves, without vines; (13) oblong wreath shape of red, orange, yellow, and green acorn-like flowers with green leaves; (14) red, orange, yellow, and reddish brown flowers and buds in brown and yellow vase; (15) symmetrical design of red, orange, yellow, and blue flowers on intertwined vines; (16) red and yellow flowers and buds with green vines with undulating edges in orange and yellow vase. Hand quilted; 18 stitches per inch. Backing is of seamed white cotton that is coarser that that used on each block (same is true for the border). Thin cotton batting. Bound front to back. Does not appear to have any markings. Unknown maker, probably Maryland, 1840-1870, c1855.Acquisition
