Description

Quilt. Appliqué, in the Baltimore Album quilt tradition. 84" x 84". Constructed of 16 16" blocks. Hand sewn. In red, orange, yellow, light green, bright blue, light grayish blue (possibly a faded green? Unlike the green leaves used at the borders?) cottons on white cotton, embroidery details in pink, brown, green, and dark blue wool. Proceeding from the corner with the documentation label, left to right, up the quilt, the pictorial blocks include: (1) circular vine motif with red flowers and buds (light blue foliage); (2) circular wreath motif with feathery light blue foliage, triangular red flowers, and a red bird in the center with embroidered details; (3) red and orange vase with large light blue leaves and red, forked flowers; (4) circular grapevine motif of light blue lines, bright blue grapes, and clumps of red cherries with embroidered stems in the center; (5) circular wreath of acorn-shaped flowers and light blue foliage; (6) red and yellow vase of several types of red, orange, yellow, and blue flowers, light blue foliage; (7) circular wreath of strawberries with embroidered stems and seeds, light blue foliage; (8) symmetrical motif of spiny light blue and red figures with a red, yellow eight-pointed star in the center; (9) orange and yellow vase of red, orange, yellow, blue flowers, light blue foliage; (10) circular wreath of red and blue flowers and light blue foliage; (11) woven red fabric basket of red and yellow flowers, blue grapes, and light blue foliage, embroidered detail; (12) red abstract four-speared motif; (13) circular motif with red heart-shaped flowers and light blue foliage; (14) blue and orange vase of red and orange flowers with light blue foliage; (15) red circular feather motif with red bird, embroidered details, and inked outline of bird's wing; (16) bright blue wreath with red and yellow buds and red and orange bird with embroidered details. Border is of red cotton swags with three green leaves at the top of each. Hand quilted; 34 stitches per inch. Quilting is in cross-hatch patterns over the quilt with feathered circular shapes at the corners of the blocks. Some of the circular motifs have other floral quilting patterns inside them. Seamed white cotton backing; thin cotton batting. Edge bound in red cotton, applied, stitched front to back. No marks, unknown maker. Probably Maryland, 1840-1870, c1855.
