Description

Painting. Framed painting of "Bowling Brook", a horse, measures 24" x 29.5" x 1.5". Subject is the horse Bowling Brook, with a view of the Bowling Brook octagonal indoor racetrack in the distance. Painting is framed in a gilt on gesso wood frame with a narrow, egg in lashing carved design approximately .5" in from the painting. Painting is marked near the left bottom proper corner "T. E. Emmons" in black paint. Near the bottom right proper corner the painting is marked "Bowling Brook." in red paint. C.1890.

Note

The horse "Bowling Brook" belonged to Robert W. Walden; it won the Belmont and Metropolitan races. Walden named his racing stable Bowling Brook after this horse. The stables were located in Middleburg, Md. Mr. Walden was the grandfather of Thelma Walden Littlefield Shriner. Painting hung in the library at Hard Lodging. The majority of the paintings of horses from the Bowling Brook stables are in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society.
