Painting. Oil on canvas portrait, Dr. Charles Bruce Boyle of Taneytown, Md. Figure of male torso, long nose, deepset eyes, dark hair and beard, wearing black coat, white shirt, and black tie. Gilt frame with rope design border. Frame: 32.75"h x 28.125"w x 3.25"d. Canvas: 24.25"h x 19"w. Artist unknown, c. 1875.

Note

Dr. Boyle (b.1837 - d.1924) was born in Taneytown, Md; served in Co. D, 1st Maryland Cavalry, CSA, 1862-1865; Doctor of Medicine, University of Maryland, 1869; moved to Hagerstown, Md. in 1870. Buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. Painting belonged to Mrs. Mary Josephine Boyle; passed to her son, Robert Bruce Boyle, Sr.; passed to his daughter, Josephine Boyle Nester (donor).
