Red Cross pin. Round, sterling silver, front enameled white with red cross at center. .625" diameter. Belonged to Mary Bostwick Shellman and was a gift from Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross.
The Johnstown Flood of 1889 caused massive destruction to the Pennsylvania town, sweeping away homes and killing over 2,000 people. The American Red Cross, led by Clara Barton, quickly mobilized to provide food, shelter, and medical care to the survivors. Mary Shellman was among those who answered the call to help. Clara Barton gave Mary this pin in recognition of her service.Acquisition
