Coverlet, woven in 1856 by W.H. Gernand, damask coverlet manufacturer of Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. Henry C. Bennett was born September 30, 1839 near New Windsor and died in Cockeysville, Baltimore County, Maryland on January 15, 1912. He was the son of Levi Tivis Bennett and Mary M. (Shipley) Bennett of New Windsor. The Bennett family were originally settled in the Freedom District of the County, south of Oakland. There are several family cemeteries at Old Salem Church in the Franklin District. Henry C. Bennett is buried with his parents at the New Windsor Presbyterian Church. Bennett was a bachelor, lived with his parents and, with his brother Nimrod, farmed their substantial properties. His father dies in 1865 and his brother in 1870; the farm was sold and Henry and his mother moved into New Windsor. Later she and Henry moved to Texas, near Cockeysville in Baltimore County, where they lived with his sister Charlotte who had married her first cousin Vincent T. Shipley. On the death of his mother he went to live with his nephew and niece, Harry Vincent and Idora (Shipley) Shipley on their farm "Oakland" on the Beaverdam Road near Cockeysville. This coverlet is given to the Society on behalf of the Shipleys of Baltimore County by Linwood Parks Shipley of Summit, New Jersey.Acquisition
