General Notes

Note

This coverlet was made for Andrew and Barbara Bostian and their eldest daughter, Margaret, in 1849. According to the donor, Margaret married Daniel Haines and had two sons, Samuel D. and Andrew. Margaret and Daniel both died at a young age, at which time the boys went to live with and be raised by their aunt and uncle, Mary Bostian Foreman and Benjamin Foreman. At that time, Mary became guardian of the coverlet on behalf of her late sister. At Mary Foreman's death, her nephews, Samuel D. and Andrew Haines, became executors of her estate and Samuel D. finally took possession of the coverlet. Samuel D. Haines married Ellen Whitmore and had a son, Samuel David. He inherited the coverlet from his father. Samuel David Haines then willed it to his daughter, Catherine Haines Newton, who presented it to the Historical Society on behalf of the family of Samuel David Haines in 1996.
