Coverlet. Cotton, 84" x 89.5". Background color is white; around edge is a band with a repeating leaf pattern. Field composed of 12 bands; each band has one of 2 designs and the bands alternate - one design has a repeating pattern of a large urn flanked by a pair of large leaves; other design has a pattern of large stylized circular flowers. Each band is woven in red, green or dark blue; the colors alternate down the coverlet. Woven into corner block is "Edmund Utz" with a star at the center. Fringed on 3 sides; bottom fringe is white; on sides, fringe alternates colors with the bands in the design.Context
Coverlet was woven for Edmund Utz as a gift for his daughter, Catherine. Catherine married Jacob Leppo. After her death, the coverlet went to her son, Edmund P. Leppo, who was born in Adams County, PA in 1901. He died Oct. 12, 1993. The coverlet was given to his friend, Margaret Seitz, to bring to the HSCC. Mrs. Seitz died in 1999 and her son, the donor, brought the coverlet to the Society. See Other Info for text of note attached to coverlet. Note attached to coverlet reads "Donated by Edmund P. Leppo, Old Hanover Rd., Westminster, Md. He was the son of Jacob and Catherine Utz Leppo. Born in Adams County, Pa. This coverlet, woven with Edmond Utz on the corner of it, was woven for Edmond Utz for his daughter Catherine Utz. When Edmond Leppo's mother died, Edmond got the coverlet. So it is very old and was never used, is in perfect condition. Edmund was 92 and died Oct. 12, 1993. He had been a member of the Society for a number of years until his death. The coverlet was given to his good friend Margaret F.S. Seitz, also a member, to bring to the Society.Acquisition
