General Notes

Note

Ralph Steiner Reifsnider (b.1879 - d.1944) lived his entire life in Carroll County, primarily Westminster. He was the son of Charles T. Reifsnider, associate judge of the Fifth Circuit Court, appointed in 1899. Ralph married Norma Gilbert; they built a home on Fairground Hill, later assigned the address 404 East Main Street. The 6-acre property included a stable, kennel, two chicken houses and hatchery, a show jumping ring and a horse training track. In the 1930s, Reifsnider built two brick houses on the site of the ring: 406 E. Main for him and his wife; 408 E. Main for their daughter, Dorothy (d.1974), and her husband, Charles Kenneth Perry (d.1965). Reifsnider entered his horses in numerous shows throughout the area. This collection of ribbons was won by Petty Girl and Pony Boy [originally named Conewengo Chief]; riders were Floyd "Skinner" Dull, Frank Ruppert and, later, R. Kenneth Perry (donor and Reifsnider's grandson). Both house are gone and an apartment complex stands on the site. See accession file for more information.
