Original deed of gift reads "1 silk [dress] from Farm Content, daughters of Jacob Shriver" Measurements: waist: 22 1/2" hem circumference: 125" pelerine length: 19" including 1 1/2" fringe trim. Materials: white & gray with black brocaded striped silk, glazed linen bodice lining, brown glazed cotton hem lining. Date: c.1845. Dress of white & gray with figured black brocaded strip design silk, bodice is of fan-front design, pleated from shoulder to basque waist point, side edges of front of bodice have white and black silk cording and white and black fringe. At the waist point the cording is crossed and white and black silk buttons hold cording in place at sides. Under fan front, the bodice closes at the neck with hooks & eyes, and also closes at the center back with hooks & eyes down to the skirt. Long sleeves have pleating, cording, and fringe detail at upper arm and pleating and cording at cuff. Skirt attached to bodice in gauged gathers, gathering thread still present in some areas. Bottom of skirt has 2 flounces on bias with piping at top and fringe at bottom. Hem is lined with brown glazed cotton, 12" deep. Wrapped cord applied to hem as a brush braid. Hand sewn. Hooks and eyes are hammered brass.Acquisition
