Two columns of script writing underneath date, title, subtitles form the body. Original document translated by Melchior Steiner and Charles Cist in July 1776.

Context

This document is a reproduction of a Declaration of Independence "Broadside", that is a document designed to be widely distributed and read aloud to the public, translated into German by Melchior Steiner and Charles Cist a few days after July 4th, 1776. Aimed at gaining the support of heavily German speaking areas including Pennsylvania and what would eventually become Carroll County and its surrounding areas, this document was essential for gathering support for the revolutionary cause. One of two surviving examples of a German broadside, this document shows how important it was for the founders to share their ideals with all peoples of America regardless of language.
