Description

Desk, slant-top. 1810-1825. Rectangular hinged lid rests on two wood supports that slide out with a knob. Inside are six cubbies and three drawers with wood knobs. Lower section of desk has two hinged doors that open to reveal three shelves. Molded bottom edge. Feet are turned with large balls. Keyhole on lid and door. 53"h x 42.5"w x 20.5"d.

Note

HSCC Newsletter, Vol. 10, No. 3, June 1961 reads that "a walnut scribe's desk used by Joseph Steele while he was one of 'the commissioners of the tax' when the county was formed in 1837, also a member of the committee to divide the county into districts was given to the society by his granddaughter, Miss Ethel Steele." Original deed of gift reads "Joseph Steele desk - a commissioner of the tax when the county was formed in 1837." HSCC Newsletter, Vol. 10, No. 3, June 1961.
