Horace Landon Shipley, a storeowner in the Freedom District of Carroll County was conscripted into the 12th Maryland Volunteer Infantry. The 12th was organized July 30, 1864, as an emergency response to the Confederate invasion that month. The men were enlisted to serve for only 100 days and the unit had only five companies. The regiment spent most of its time on guard duty along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad between Baltimore and Kearneysville, Virginia.
