Painting. Framed painting of "The Friar of Bowling Brook", a horse, measures 18.5" x 23" x 1.25". View is of a brown horse against trees at the left and right of the painting. A mark at the bottom left proper corner reads "T BEAUMONT / 97". The reverse side of the canvas is marked in black ink ""THE FRIAR" / of / Bowling Brook". The frame back is marked on the left proper side "THE FRIAR OF BOWLING BROOK" in black ink. The frame is of quarter-round molding, stained to a cherry color. 1897.Acquisition

Note
"The Friar" was one of the horses owned by Robert W. Walden at his Bowling Brook racing stables in Middleburg, Md. Mr. Walden was the grandfather of Thelma Walden Littlefield Shriner. Painting hung in the library at Hard Lodging. The majority of the paintings of horses from the Bowling Brook stables are in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society.
