Farmers’ Fertilizer & Feed Co. was formed as Farmers’ Fertilizer Co. in May 1885. In 1906, the name was changed to Farmers’ Fertilizer & Feed Co. The company began purchasing branches in 1935 with the purchase of Farmers Exchange Co. in Union Bridge. Future purchases resulted in the acquisition of Devilbiss Brothers in New Windsor (1945), Reindollar Co. in Taneytown (1957), Wayne Fertilizer & Feed Co., in Upperco (1958), Hampstead Fertilizer Co. (1960), and Flush Grain Co. in Hampstead and Sykesville (1960). Farmers’ Fertilizer & Feed Co. also published a newsletter to surrounding farms in Carroll County and adjacent areas titled the "Barn-E-gram", claiming a circulation of 1500 farmers in 1962. Southern States bought the enterprise in 1969.
Charles M. Sackett began his involvement with Farmers Fertilizer & Feed as an assistant to his father, Homer N. Sackett, who was District Manager for Allied Mills, Inc. from 1934 to his death in 1957. After this, Charles Sackett became District Manager. Allied Mills, Inc. was taken over by Continental Grain Co. in 1965. The donor continued as District Manager until his retirement in 1983. He moved to the Westminster area from Bridgewater, Va., in 1934.
