Description

Two pieces, attach to each other by sliding flat sides of handles together. (A) 10.5"h x 1.5"w x .5"d - when opened. Iron, steel, wood-- folding spoon and two-prong fork. "A.Z." carved into wood. Two brass pins on inside of handle. Imprinted on fork-"Army Knife Union." (B) 8"h x 0.75"w x 0.375"d - when opened. Walnut handle with "A Z" carved in one side, two keyhole notches on other side of handle. Folding steel blade.

Note

Owned by Pvt. George Augustus Zahn, a Westminster shoemaker, who was among the first Marylanders to join the Union Army. Zahn enlisted in the 1st Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade, in 1861 and later served in the 13th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry. After the war, Zahn was one of the ten original "comrades" who founded Burns Post 13, Grand Army of the Republic. Original deed of gift reads "Augustus Zahn - knife, fork, spoon, Civil war".
