Description

Lock from the Adam Good Tavern in Taneytown, Carroll County, Maryland. C. 1760-1790. Steel plate with two latches at one end. Two bars extend out from other end. Small L-shaped piece of the door is still attached. 7.5"h x 8.5" w x 8"d.

Original deed of gift reads "1 Lock from the Adam Good Tavern in Taneytown, Carroll County, Maryland." George and Martha Washington spent the night at the Good Tavern on July 1, 1791. Washington is reported to have been amused by the tavern sign which read "A dam Good Tavern Entertainment for Man or Beast."
