Context

Recreation of a robe à la française worn by Mary "Polly" Sterrett (1744-1779), philanthropist and second wife of General Mordecai Gist (1743-1792). Originating in France between 1720-1780, the robe à la française was the height of fashion for aristocratic and upper class women of the time.
