Novelty. Souvenir of Confederate encampment that belonged to Mary Shellman. Woven from strips of leaves into the shape of a palmetto tree; two crossed flags across front of trunk. Natural color except for the flags which at one time were painted; traces of red and blue paint remain. Stiched to a cardboard backing. On backing Mary Shellman has written "Confederate Reunion Charleston S.C 1899". [Date is not clear.] 4.5" x 2.25"Acquisition

Souvenir from a Confederate veterans’ encampment. On the back Mary has written “Confederate Reunion Charleston.” Mary had made friends with a group of the veterans during the train ride from Charleston to Washington. Part of collection of G.A.R. medals and ribbons acquired by Mary Shellman.
