Description

Pestle and grinding stone set (A-B). (A) large stone slab (grinding stone) with indent for grinding. Marked with a white square and number "2." in black ink. (B) Spherical stone tool (pestle) with irregular sides from use. Sits in the indent of the grinding stone. Dated c. 7000-1,250 BC. Possibly from the Lenape or Susquehannock communities.

Context

These stones are from the indigenous peoples who lived in the area now known as Carroll County long before European Colonial settlement, possibly coming from either the Susquehannock or Lenape communities who continue to reside in this area. These stones would have been used for grinding agricultural staples of corn, squash, and beans, known as the "Three Sisters".
