Quilt. Cotton; constructed of 90 blocks, each 7” square. Blocks are in two alternating patterns: one is four triangles, two white triangles alternating with two triangles of red with printed with rows of white flowers; other is two large triangles, one white and the other yellow. Border is alternating triangles of white and pink with small printed flowers. Backing is white cotton. Stamped on back in black in at corner: “Emma C. Norris.” 82” x 76”.Context
Made by Emma Charlotte Norris Roop. Emma (22 August 1851 – 15 March 1924) was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Israel H.L. Norris. She married William A. Roop (21 April 1851 - 19 November 1931) in 1873. They were farmers who lived on Route 27, near Kate Wagner Road. They had six children: Margaret Julia Roop (14 February 1875 - 10 November 1957); Joel Israel Roop (20 February 1877 - 7 February 1964); Elsie Emma Roop (27 September 1878 - 31 October 1979); Annie Elizabeth Roop (14 July 1882 - 26 April 1897); Rachel Roop Layman [Mrs. Claiborne A.] (2 February 1886 - 24 March 1962); Charles William Roop (28 October 1888 - 28 March 1889). They attended Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren and are buried in the Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Quilt was inherited by Emma's son Joel Israel Roop. It then went to his son, Ralph Geiman Roop (27 November 1900 - 8 August 1980) and then to Ralph's son, Roger Gary Roop (2 January 1931 - ), the donor.Acquisition
