Description

Quilt. Appliquéd quilted with patriotic design. 91.5" x 91.5". White cotton background. Appliquéd in gray, red and yellow; central design is eagle with banner embroidered "E Pluribus Unum," behind eagle is circle of thirty stars; above eagle is pair of crossed American flags with a balance at center. Smaller eagle at each corner. Bordered by large vine design with red flowers. Quilted in diamond, feather, and leaf stitching. Signed "Margaret E. Buckey 1857". White cotton backing with thin cotton batting.

Context

Made by Margaret E. Buckey [b. 4 February 1837 – d. 13 August 1925], daughter of Ezra and Susannah Root Buckey when she was only 20. She married Elhannan Englar [b. 23 January 1833 – d. 4 February 1892] the following year. Margaret and Elhannan had four children: Susan Alice Englar [1859–1863], Ezra Joseph Englar [1862–1943], Clara Eugenia Englar [1864–1924], and George P. B. Englar [1867–1948]. The entire family are buried at Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Union Bridge. Samplers by her mother, Susannah Root Buckey [1809-1841], and her aunt, Ann Root Buckey [1797-1863], are in HSCC collection. Margaret's sewing table, used while making this quilt is also in HSCC collection, 95.36.1.
