Description

Quilt. Pieced quilt, 110" x 110.5". Constructed of 25 pieced blocks and 16 white blocks, each 13". Pieced blocks made of red print, brown print and white alternate with white blocks. Hand quilted in wreath pattern. Names of the sisters who made the quilt are quilted in the corners. Signatures read "MAY 1834 AMANDA MATTER AMANDA MATTER JULIA ANN MATTER SARAH MATTER J.N. PARKE". Border is 1" cotton chintz with floral pattern in beige, red and blue. Edged by rolling back over front and handstitching. White cotton backing and cotton filler.

Note

Original deed of gift reads "Quilt, made by Julia Ann Motter, Sarah Motter, and J. M. Parker. Appliquéd with white background circa:[blank]" Quilts were erroneously cataloged again in 1979 like the coverlets, possibly resulting in duplicated deeds of gift. This may be an example of this. Appraised at $4,500.00 by T.R. O'Farrell, Inc. in February 1992.
