Description

Quilt. Friendship quilt. 97" x 100.5". Pieced quilt constructed of 36 red and white patchwork blocks alternating with 25 white blocks; blocks are 10". White blocks decorated in trapunto with quilted stuffed flowers in different designs. 4.5" border has red and white sawtooth pattern. Edged with red print binding that is folded over back and front and then handstitched. Backed with white cotton. Inscribed "1842-1846 Near Taneytown April 18,1842". Names of the women who made the quilt appear on the squares. Inscriptions are: "Jane Nunemaker Emmitsburg, Md."; "Susan G. Wolff Easton, Pa, May 1842"; "Alice A. Note

Quilt was made for Dr. Robert S. Grier by the women of his congregations. He was pastor of the Piney Creek Presbyterian Church near Taneytown and the Emmitsburg Church (Frederick County) from 1814-1866. Quilts were erroneously cataloged again in 1979 like the coverlets, possibly resulting in duplicated deeds of gift. This may be an example of this.
