Description

Quilt. Crazy quilt. 73.25" x 75.5". Divided into 25 11" patchwork blocks made from a variety of silk and wool fabrics. Each block decorated with a variety of stitches and patterns that are embroidered and painted. Painted inscription "L.C. Bennett Sept. 4th, 1885 165 W. Hoffman Sept 16, 1885". Border is burgundy velvet with handpainted flowers and navy squares at corners. Machine stitched at edge. Backing is burgundy wool flannel, machine stitched.

Context

"l.C. Bennett" is probably Lilly Carter Bennett (b.1851 - d.1926). Lilly married Gofortj Robert Bennett (b.1834 - d.1902), the father of Lilly Brooks Bennett (b.1874 - d.1969). Quilt may have been made by Lilly's mother in Louisiana. Original deed of gift reads "1825 Crazy Quilt with hand painted Border / Gladys Bowers New Windsor.
