On 1 Jan 1885, he went to work at Farmers and Mechanics National Bank, where his father was a clerk. Farmers and Mechanics merged with two other banks, finally becoming Carroll County National Bank in 1948. In 1948, Cunningham became Chairman of the bank. On January 1, 1960, the directors of the bank honored Mr. Cunningham by establishing the John H. Cunningham Scholarship, a $1,000 grant for each of four college years awarded to a Carroll county student. At the time of his death, he was believed to be the oldest still active banker in the US (he was 98) and also to have the longest continuous years of service (77 years).
