The donors of this portrait commissioned the artist to execute this work for display with Rinehart sculpture and memorabilia exhibited in the Sherman-Fisher-Shellman House. Richard Eichman (5 November 1940 – 4 January 2001) was born in Union Bridge, MD. He attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore where he became an accomplished pianist. Eichman taught music in the Baltimore County school system for 18 years, retiring in 1980. While teaching music, Eichman studied painting at the Schuler School for Fine Arts in Baltimore. After retiring, he returned to Union Bridge. There he made a living as an artist, primarily painting portraits. For a number of years he wrote a column for the Carroll County Times, most of which contained an original poem. He also composed numerous poems for acquaintances. In 1998, Eichman was named the "poet laureate of Union Bridge." Eichman died in 2001.
