Description

Sampler. Pictorial sampler. Natural linen with cross, 2-sided line and eyelet stitches in red, yellow, green, blue and pink. Central design is large picture of a brick house (believed to be actual house, still standing in Frederick County) with birds, dogs and fence around yard. Strawberry border. Verse "When I am dead and in my grave and all my bones are Rotten remember me when this you see the dead are soone forgotten". Signed "Margaret Kinzer's work done in her thirteenth year". 17.25" x 21". [Was framed by conservator for exhibit at Maryland Historical Society; is still in frame]

Sampler inventory #S12. Made by Margaret Kinzer (b. 1807, Lancaster, PA - d. 12 November 1885). She married Nathan Englar (b. 13 August 1806 - d. 8 January 1883). They had five children: Henry, Josiah [b. 1835 - d. 1910; married Margaret Senseney (1843 - 1885), buried at Pipe Creek Brethren Cemetery, New Windsor]; Anna Elizabeth; Lydia Melvina; John David; and Nathan. Margaret and her husband are both buried at Beaver Dam Brethren Cemetery, Johnsville. See Sampler file for more information. From the estate of Vivian E. Barnes. Executor was Thomas F.
