Description

Sampler. Alphabet/pictorial sampler. Worked with wool threads [?] on natural linen. Four alphabets in blue and brown. At bottom is pictorial design featuring a central basket with a large central flower flanked by birds; central design flanked by more flowers with birds and dogs. Signed "Ruth Elizabeth Bennetts work 1844." 17.25"h x 16.5"w. Wife of Jesse Crawford.

Ruth Elizabeth Bennett (b.12 July 1830, in Baltimore [now Carroll] County - d.18 Nov. 1901) married Dr. Francis J. Crawford (b. 1 Nov 1819 - d. 18 March 1885) in Carroll County, 19 May 1853. They had seven children, five of whom survived childhood: Fannie Bell (Mrs. R.O.D. Warfield), Kate Emma (Mrs. Henry S. Davis), Francis Albert, William Lloyd and Charles Clement. Ruth and her husband are buried in the cemetery at the Taylorsville U.M. Church. Her parents, Benjamin Bennett (b. 6 Sept 1785 - d. 21 Dec1834) and Polly Mitchell (b. 29 Sept 1788 - d. 11 May 1836), died in Baltimore County, leaving Ruth an orphan at age 6. Benjamin and Polly are buried at Salem United Methodist Church cemetery; their tombstones were carved by Sebastian "Boss" Hammond. Was loaned by Lola B. Crawford for "Sampling the ABCs" exhibition in 1982. Sampler purchased at auction at T.R. O'Farrell, Inc. on 19 May 2003. Was in modern frame; label on frame read "Custom Framing by The Camera Shop, Westminster, 848-8481; modern frame and mat have been discarded.
