Painting. Framed oil on canvas portrait of Thelma Walden Littlefield Shriner measures 23.75" x 19.5" x 2.5". View is of subject looking forward, wearing a blue jacket and top and eyeglasses against a brown background. Portrait is marked at lower right proper corner in yellow "R. EICHMAN fecit / anno / MCMLXXXVII". Frame is gilt gesso over wood. It is ornamented at the corners with floral motifs. An engraved brass plaque at the bottom of the painting reads "Thelma Littlefield Shriner". Painted by Richard Eichmann, Union Bridge, Maryland, 1987.

Note

Thelma Walden Littlefield Shriner was the restorer of Hard Lodging. The portrait hung in the parlor at Hard Lodging. Richard Eichman (5 November 1940 – 4 January 2001) was born in Union Bridge, MD. He attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore where he became an accomplished pianist. Eichman taught music in the Baltimore County school system for 18 years, retiring in 1980. While teaching music, Eichman studied painting at the Schuler School for Fine Arts in Baltimore. After retiring, he returned to Union Bridge. There he made a living as an artist, primarily painting portraits. For a number of years he wrote a column for the Carroll County Times, most of which contained an original poem. He also composed numerous poems for acquaintances. In 1998, Eichman was named the "poet laureate of Union Bridge." Eichman died in 2001.
