General Notes

Note

Polly Leatherman (4 April 1781 - 6 March 1859) married Isaac Shriver on 22 April 22 1802. They settled in Westminster where Isaac became involved in real estate. He served several terms in the House of Delegates and was active in that body during the formation of Carroll County. He became president of the Westminster Bank in 1826 and held that post for 30 years. Polly and Isaac had ten children. HSCC Newsletter, Vol. 13, No. 1, January 1964 reads "American primitive oil portrait of Polly Leatherman Shriver, 1781-1859, wife of Isaac Shriver." Painting was presented to the collection by the subject's great-great-great-granddaughter, Miss Mary E. Yingling. Portrait was unidenified at time of inventory; believed that "E.T. Reifsnider" written on frame was name of subject. Portrait identified by comparison with photograph of her sister, Ann Margaret Leatherman Shriver, donated to HSCC in 2011. Per Helen Shriver Riley, family legend holds that the sisters looked so much alike that one sister posed for both portraits. The sisters married brothers.
