Sword. Civil War sword of Captain Daniel Rinehart, Co. F, 7th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry, 1862-1864. A: Sword. Steel blade is ornately decorated with "U.S." on one side and an American eagle on the other; each surrounded by elaborate scroll designs. Same eagle design is repeated on the guard. Sharkskin wrapped on the grips. B: Scabbard. 34"h x 2"w x 0.75"d. Steel, undecorated with two rings for attaching to belt.Acquisition

Belonged to Captain Daniel Rinehart [25 February 1823 - 23 September 1886], commander, Co. F, 7th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry. Rinehart was commissioned on August 28, 1862 and commanded the unit until his discharge for disability in 1864. The unit's engagements included the Battle of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor and the assault on Petersburg. The sword is a non-regulation foot officer's sword imported from Germany.
