General Notes

Note

Part of a series of Westminster souvenir models commissioned by the Hickory Stick, a gift shop at 28 Liberty, the corner of Liberty and Green Streets. Martha Hopkins opened the Hickory Stick as a country store in 1983 on Pennsylvania Avenue in Westminster. In the early years of the store, it featured country furniture, historic lighting, wall stencils, country wall decor including framed prints and dried floral arrangements. In 1990, Martha sold the business to Cindy Raub and Sandy Scott. They doubled their space on Pennsylvania Avenue by taking over the second floor of the building and then moved to 28 Liberty Street in 1995. Cindy left the business in 1999. The business switched from "country gifts and home accents" to a boutique featuring unique gifts and fashion accessories. Thomas W. Mather, Sr., opened a small store at the corner of West Main and John Streets in 1890. In 1897, the firm became T.W Mather and Sons and moved to 31 East Main Street. The store expanded in 1902, tripling the floor space by adding a third floor and basement. In 1954, The Parsons Company bought the store but continued to operate under the Mathers name. Mathers closed in 1996.
