The card accompanying the photograph reads, "Thorndale, Owner - Mr. J.W. Cain, Location- Taneytown Road, Present size- 150 acres. Originally a part of a tract of land known as Runnymede Extended. The house was built about 1840 by Dr. Clotworthy Birnie. It was a seminary for Young Ladies from to _________, and was called Thorndale. The name was given from a hedge which ran along the property for over a mile on each side of the [?]. Presently (1973) owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Parrish".
