Ticket. Admission to Medical Department, Pennsylvania College, "Lectures on the Principles & Practice of Medicine" by William Darrach M.D., for Mr. J. J. Weaver, white card 3.75" x 4.75",with blue finish, black printing, and depiction of Greek figure, validated in black ink, Philadelphia, 1845.Context
In the first half of the 1800s, medical students did not pay tuition for their schooling in the way we do today. Instead, students purchased tickets to individual lectures offered by various professors. The tickets then served as both a receipt for the student, as well as proof of attendance that could be offered to qualify for graduation.
This ticket was used by Dr. William J. Weaver, Sr., who attended medical school at Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College) in Philadelphia and graduated in 1846.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. William Darrach. William Darrach (1796–1865), a Philadelphia-born physician of Scotch-Irish descent, was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton before completing advanced medical training in Europe. He built a respected career as a general practitioner, hospital physician, and medical educator, contributing to anatomical research and serving in institutions such as the Philadelphia Medical Dispensary and Pennsylvania Medical CollegeAcquisition
