Truck, mail. Toy. Postal service "sit or stand" van. Painted sheet metal; body is rectangular with slightly convex roof and sloping front; roof and top half of body are white, below this is a wide red stripe running around body, bottom of body is dark blue. Printed on truck is "Use Zip Code!!" and "U.S. MAIL", on roof is "6134572." Inside is a flat piece of metal painted to give the illusion of the seats, dashboard and driver, three-dimensional head on driver. Collected by John R. Byers (11 September 1901 - 31 December 1987) while he was postmaster, 1957-1971. Byers was a lifelong Carroll County resident. In 1952 Byers enlisted in the Navy and eventually became a Navy Photographer until he completed his service in 1946. After returning home in 1946 Byers became very engaged in the Carroll County community and politics. Byers was elected to the Westminster City Council in 1951 and served until 1961. During those same years Byers also owned and operated The F.A. Sharrer Funeral Home.
