Stethoscope. Natural wood lightweight wooden obstetric stethoscope, c. 1980. 2 1/4" W x 6 3/4" H.

Context

This reproduction wooden stethoscope also known as a monaural stethoscope would have been common during Dr. Colgate’s time. It is a simple hollow tube used to listen to the body. French doctor René Laennec invented it in 1816 to avoid pressing his ear directly onto his female patients' chests. The wood helps sound travel clearly to one ear.
