Description

Ambrotype. 1/6 plate; portrait of Augustus Zahn, c.1860. Young man in civilian clothes, dark jacket, vest and tie with white shirt; cheeks are tinted. Plate mounted in right side of case. [Image is hard to identify, may be a tintype.] Case is wood with leather covering. Copper mat and glass in front of plate. Single hook closure. White tape on glass reads "Augustus Zahn". 3.625" x 3.125" x .25".

Note

Original deed of gift reads "small square picture of Augustus Zahn, Billy Burns GAR". Zahn, a Westminster shoemaker, enlisted as a Private in Company B, 1st Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade. In November 1861. Later transferred to Company B, 13th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry. Zahn was one of the ten original "comrades" who founded Burns Post 13, Grand Army of the Republic. "Void" is written across deed of gift. Obejct was not numbered but fits description of this object.
