Train Engine 1538Entry/Object ID
2001.60.7Description
Caption "Engine 1538, a class E 4-6-2 type headed south with a passenger train. Engine 1538 was built by Schenectady in August of 1910. The clean condition of the engine suggests it has recently been delivered. The tall device in the center foreground is a Hall "Banjo" signal, an early type automatic block signal. The C&NW system of numbering signals is based on miles and helps to establish the location of this photo. The number "36" on the face refers to the milepost while the number "1" indicaties it is the first signal on the north or westward track between mileposts 36 and 37. Thus this photo was taken just north of the Waukegan, Illinois depot which is at milepost 35.94. This photo establishes earliest possible date of photos as August of 1910, because the other photos appear to have been taken during the same time period, and the engine looks rather new. Other Gourley photos were taken at Wells Street. Since it is known that class E engines did run into Wells Street, these photos most likely were taken prior to the opening of the Madison Street Staton on June 4, 1911."Lexicon
