Description

Caption "Engine 1443, a class D Atlantic, carrying signals for a following section, headed south with a passenger train. Engine 1443 was built by Schenectady in May of 1907 and scrapped in 1936. Darker coloration on the side of the tender indicates that the tank heater was not warming water within which resulted in condensation forming on outside surfaces. Based on the C & NW signal numbering system it is safe to assume this photo was taken just north of the Waukegan, Illinois depot which is a milepost 35.94. The smokebox shows definite use of graphite. Date Unknown."
