Rumsey flag staff and military parade.
The dedication of the flag staff at Lake Forest College, it took place on April 27, 1916, a Thursday afternoon at 4 P.M. The day was selected because it was the birthday anniversary of General Grant. The staff was presented by Captain Israel Parsons Rumsey after he learned that the college never had one. Its location was set in the center of the open space in front of the library, firmly fixed in a deep cement base and crowned with a shining gilt ball. The flag raiser was Margaret Flagstaff Stroh, Grant Stroh's eldest daughter. Many citizens and students were present. Courtesy of Commander W.A. Moffett of the US Naval Training Station, The Marine Band and a detail of the Cadets of the Naval Station added much to the exercises. The college's senior class made the flag their class gift.Lexicon
